Molasses Crinkles

Molasses Crinkles (an old-fashioned spice cookie)

1 cup backed brown sugar
3/4 cup shortening
1/4 cup light molasses
1 egg
2 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/4 teaspoon salt
Granulated white sugar

Mix brown sugar, shortening, molasses and egg. Mix in flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, cloves and salt. Cover and refrigerate at least 1 hour.

Heat oven to 375 F. Shape dough by rounded teaspoonfuls into balls. Roll the balls in granulated white sugar and place 3" apart on lightly greased cookie sheet. Bake just until set, 10 to 12 minutes. Immediately remove from cookie sheet to a wire rack to cool. Makes about 3 dozen cookies. These store nicely in an airtight container.
